Effects of a Shoulder Injury

Once fractures and other significant structural damage have been ruled out, simple shoulder movements should be initiated to minimize further damage. Immobility increases muscle wasting and can cause the protective ligaments to stretch out, thus reducing their ability to protect. Early movement can reduce these problems by preventing areas of the capsule from contracting and also helping to correctly align newly forming tissues.

One of the best, as well as simple shoulder injury treatment that is there is to keep your shoulder warm using either a heating pad or hot compresses. You can use them over the injured area for around fifteen minutes at a time for around five times a day. A heating pad can also be kept under your armpit as the warmth is known to travel all over the shoulder area. Heating pads can also be kept underneath the injured area while sleeping too.

Exercises like shoulder and chest presses have received plenty of blame for causing shoulder injury pain and are typically one of the first exercises that most health and fitness professionals recommend avoiding at all costs.They have been blamed for everything from placing excessive strain on the shoulder joints to causing rotator cuff tears to impingement syndrome.

Stretching exercises are also excellent after you have suffered from shoulder injuries, as long as you do not push your body too far too fast. Stretching all of the muscles in your shoulder area will help to keep them loose and prevent any pressure on the shoulder joint that may cause pain or discomfort. Stretching also helps to strengthen your muscles, and this will prevent future injuries to your shoulder. Shoulder Rolls can help to stretch out your shoulder and neck muscles gently, and so can wide back and shoulder stretches.

Pain is the first symptom that something is wrong with the shoulder joint. It can be sudden and sharp, as with a dislocation, or slow growing and dull as with a tear. In the latter case it starts with a tingle on the side of the shoulder that gradually intensifies and spreads down to the elbow, with an unusual feeling of weakness upon raising the arm.

During the workout sessions a great deal of stress is generated and your shoulders bear the maximum burden. This is the main reason behind shoulder injuries. You can be in sidelines for period of time because of these. Playing games, training martial arts or doing exercises that involve excess hand movement are some of the prominent causes of common shoulder injuries.

Stretching is another important aspect of shoulder exercises. Prior to performing any strenuous activities or sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, badminton, or even aerobics, it is vital that stretching is done first. This prepares the body before an activity, thus, relaxing the muscles around the joints.

It is important to listen to the messages that your body is giving you. Any pain caused by a rotator cuff problem is almost certainly the result of inflammation of the muscles and tendons. Because your shoulder is such a complex joint, any inflammation can result in an impingement of the muscle resulting in more damage being done as you continue to use it.

If anything fails, surgery may be performed, or manipulation under general anesthesia for a Frozen Shoulder. These are extreme solutions though and, though effective, should be taken as a last resort. In fact it is very much possible to avoid relying on anti inflammatory drugs for months and months or even surgery by following a proper shoulder injury rehabilitation program that can cut down on recovery times to few weeks.
